Quick Food Allergy Facts

  • It is reported that 8% of U.S. children have a food allergy, some of them severe enough to be considered life threatening. Approximately 125 people die in the U.S. every year from food allergies. Peanut allergy is the most common cause of death from food allergies. There are even kids with multiple food allergies. One of the kids I met through the peanut allergy study I am in, is severely allergic to more than 5 different foods!

    Approximately 90% of all food allergy reactions can be attributed to the following foods: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat. Since 2006, food makers have been required to clearly state on food labels (after or adjacent to the list of ingredients) whether their products contain these eight most common food allergens. But you can not rely on food labels alone. Did you know that "arachis" is an alternative term for peanut or that many restaurants add peanut butter to their sauces or chili as a thickening agent?

Disney World Peanut Safe Dining

Our son Bo, who has a severe peanut allergy, has safely dined at these peanut safe restaurants in Disney World in Orlando, FL during vacations in 2007, 2008 and 2009. We want to thank the folks at Disney and the staff of these food allergy friendly restaurants for going the extra mile with accommodating park guests with food allergies. The list below of peanut free restaurants in the Disney World area will help you plan a peanut safe dining experience when visiting Orlando, Florida. Note, each park also can provide updated printed lists of available peanut free snacks, including ice cream, that can be purchased from the vendors in the parks!

We have had good experiences with the Disney Dining Plan. It's a  great value with good food choices for guests with or without food allergies that are staying on resort properties.

  1. Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe (fast food, plus some good entrees too)

EPCOT:

  1. Tutto Italia Ristorante  (superb!)

I enjoyed your website very much. I am so happy for you and your family with the success of the trials bo went through. My son Jake is 12 and has a peanut allergy. It is becoming really hard for him to deal lately. we are going to disney actually next week. we have gone 3 times in the past 4 years. I know they are great , after reading your post i was wondering if you ate at these restaurants before the clinical trials. I tend to be really cautious we do eat at some but any tips or advice would be great if you get this e-mail in time. i was particuarlly interested in rainforest cafe i know they have one in animal kingdom is that one safe?
